Young Enterprise Seminar at St. Louis
Year 8 students at St Louis Grammar participated in the Young Enterprise ‘Your School- Your Business’ active learning workshops. The event which is held annually is an integral part of the Year 8 Learning for Life and Work programme and is organised by Mrs J Devlin, Head of Careers and Employability.
The activity afternoon included the opportunity for students to meet and explore the roles of both teaching and support staff within their new school. Each year a support staff member accepts a ‘hot seat role’ and is interviewed by an enthusiastic body of students. Mr Sean Haughian, IT Technical Support and C2K administrator in St Louis provided the students with an overview of his career path and his role in the IT department and throughout the school and gave an insight into his interests in Photography, Animation, Gaming, Motor biking. His passion for computing captured the imagination of his young audience. A range of activities throughout the afternoon focussed on problem solving and team work unlocking the creativity and enterprise potential among the Year 8 student body.
Through the human treasure hunt and feedback exercise pupils got to know everyone in the year group. During group discussions pupils had opportunity to share thoughts about transition from primary to secondary and identify their hopes and aspirations for the year ahead. The Year 8’s proved to be natural problem solvers as they engaged in an ‘ideas’ workshop and no doubt many of their contributions will find a voice on the St Louis School council.
The camaraderie, enthusiasm and spirit of co-operation among the Year 8’s augers well for a productive and enjoyable year ahead. Mr A Monaghan (Year Head) was justifiably proud of his new charges and as they joined the family that is St. Louis.
