The Ladies Gaelic football teams at St. Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel, have started the year well recording two victories against rival Down schools in the past week. The school are currently playing at Under 16 and Under 20 levels in the competitions run by Ulster Colleges and will also compete at Under 14 level later in the school year.

The Under 16 team, coached by Briege Rice and Steven McVeigh recorded an opening day victory over their Down rivals from Newry, Our Lady’s Grammar School. Played at Pairc Liam Uí Ír in Warrenpoint, the game was a keenly contested affair with St. Louis emerging victorious with the score-line reading 3-11 to 2-8. Starring for the Kilkeel school was Sorcha McCartan who notched up an impressive personal tally of 1-6.

Later in the week it was the turn of the Under 20’s, coached by Aisling McGivern and Steven McVeigh to take to the field, this time against East Down rivals, St. Malachy’s High School, Castlewellan. Played at An Riocht’s ground at Dunavil, this encounter was thrilling with quality performances evident on both sides. However, the old saying ‘goals win matches’ was certainly true on this occasion as St. Louis ran out winners with a score-line of 10-06 to 2-16. Star of the day was Meabh O’Hare who rattled the Castlewellan net on no fewer than six occasions. However, a closer look at the score-line shows that there was only 8 points of a difference in the end in favour of the St. Louis ladies, a tribute equally to a quality attacking performance from the Castlewellan ladies.

St. Louis now move on in both competitions to meet teams from Belfast and Monaghan, but on this showing they are certainly up for the challenge.
