Culinary Delights Sampled at St. Louis
The wonderful aromas wafting from the Home Economics Department at St. Louis Grammar School Kilkeel, may well encourage your appetite as students waited in anticipation to same local meat delicacies. In a scene reminiscent of The Great British Menu, Head of Home Economics, Miss Aisling McGivern along with her sixth form students, sampled some wonderful meat dishes prepared by Mrs Patricia McClean of the LMC (Live Stock and Meat Commission).
Throughout the school pupils are encouraged to eat healthy and to give thought to their diets in general. This event proved ideal as the tasty delights were dishes that students could prepare at home with their families. The visit of the LMC also highlighted the need to support local industry, particularly important in the current economic climate.
As St Louis is located in the scenic rural Mourne area, local knowledge proved useful as many of the pupils were able to give first hand examples of how they rear their own livestock.
Students watched in awe as LMC demonstrator Mrs McClean showed them several quick, easy and ‘cost friendly’ dishes to make using local meat from butchers and also supermarkets. Much to their delight pupils then got to sample the various dishes which had generated such powerful and succulent aromas.
Mrs McClean ended the demonstration with a few quick and easy recipes pupils could use in the future perhaps when they become independent young, university students. However, Mrs McClean’s key message focused on the role of meat in their diet. She informed the St. Louis students,“tasty beef and lamb dishes are excellent sources of many essential nutrients and make an important contribution to a healthy, balanced diet and that there are surprisingly few calories in lean red meat and due to its high protein content.”
